Ninni Baeckstrom
Ninni Baeckstrom grew up in Sweden, and has been part of the Charlottesville arts community for the past 30 years, teaching and exhibiting sculpture and mosaic work. Her public arts sculptures, purchased by the city of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle, are installed in the area, and her artwork can be found at institutions and private collections in the US and Europe. Ninni’s artwork explores the human experience and natural form. “A twisted torso or the outline of a mountain ridge resonates within me and grows in to an idea for a sculpture or mosaic.” Materials inspire Ninni’s process guides her work. Over the years she has worked in cement, clay, wood and metal in different combination. Her artwork is original, and touches the primordial. Her current stoneware-figures, painted with under glazes and oxides brim with whimsy and creativity.
